Who is Kupu and what does Kupu do?

What does Kupu mean?
Kupu: To sprout, grow, and rise to a high position. Like destruction after a lava flow, Hawaii has seen challenges come upon its natural resources and people. After a lava flow the first sign of new life is the kupukupu fern. Similarly, the heart of Kupu’s mission is to bring new life to Hawaii’s people and land through restoration.

What is Kupu’s mission?
Kupu’s mission is, “To empower youth to serve their communities through character-building, service-learning, and environmental stewardship opportunities that encourage pono (integrity) with God, self and others.”

How does Kupu relate to Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC)?
Kupu is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is the umbrella organization for four youth training and development programs in the green job industry:

  1. Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC)
  2. Urban Corps (UC)
  3. Rewarding Internships for Sustainable Employment (RISE)
  4. Youth Energy Assessment Hawaii (YEAH)

Who funds Kupu?

The HYCC is a program funded and supported by various organizations such as the Department of Land and Natural Resources,AmeriCorps, Kamehameha Schools (Aina Ulu Program), the Hawaii Community Foundation, Harold H.K. Castle Foundation, NOAA, Department of Health and many other organizations.
