The Department of Land & Natural Resources has produced a half-hour television special illustrating the importance of watershed protection and restoration. “The Rain Follows the Forest,” features Jason Scott Lee setting out on a journey to learn about sustainable life in our island home.

This special also features Kupu’s own Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps members, Trey Yoshizumi, Ku’ulei Smith, Manu Akuna, Mikey Sarsfield along with their site manager, Lisa Hadway!

Join us for the “Find Your Voice” Workshop to learn about Hawaii’s legislative process and find out how you can get involved and make a difference.

This workshop provides an overview of Hawaii’s legislative process and help you become an advocate for your cause! We will demystify the legislative process, share key issues for the 2012 Legislative Session, and explain how you can take advocate effectively. You will learn how to find and track bills of interest to you, submit testimony, and make a difference on issues you care about. This event is geared toward students and recent graduates.

Confirmed speakers include: Suzanne Marinelli, Coordinator of the Public Access Room at the Hawaii State Capitol, who will explain the ins and outs of the legislative process; Nikki Love, Executive Director of Common Cause Hawaii, who will share tips on being an effective advocate for the public interest; and James Koshiba, Executive Director of Kanu Hawaii, who will discuss how you can make the biggest impact for your community and on the issues important to you. A representative from ASUH will also speak about the importance of student involvement in the community and our government.

The purpose of the He’eia Stream Restoration Project is to restore Native Hawaiian vegetation of riparian habitat in upper He’eia Stream. In addition to reforesting with native vegetation, the project includes installation of erosion control techniques to address eroding stream banks, and monitoring water quality, pre and post project implementation.

A coalition of sustainability and environmental groups will converge at the University of Hawaii-Manoa’s Campus Center Ballroom to launch the “Semester of Sustainability Kick-Off” event for Spring 2012 with keynote speaker Captain Charles Moore, the discoverer of the North Pacific Garbage Patch.

Sustainable UH is hosting the event in conjunction with the KYA Sustainability Studio, the Surfrider Foundation, the UHM Sustainability Corps, the Kokua Hawaii Foundation and the Ecology Club.

Participating organizations will have an opportunity to develop partnerships, recruit members, and share upcoming activities, projects and campaigns, and learn about the rich history and future plans for sustainability initiatives launched by UHM students, faculty, and administration.

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is a National Day of Service, and a time to re-commit to serving each other and our communities. Kupu will be returning to Kako’o ‘Oiwi this year to help them with their ongoing kalo and wetland restoration project.

Kokua Hawai’i Foundation & Sustainable Coastlines Hawai’i are hosting a beach cleanup at Kahuku Beach on Martin Luther King Day!

Kahuku Beach boarders the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge which provides a protected home for endangered Hawaiian waterbirds, migratory shorebirds, and waterfowl. The beach also serves as a resting habitat for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal and a nesting habitat for both the threatened green turtles and seabirds.

Please bring a refillable water bottle, hat, gloves, sunscreen, and a dish to share. Following the beach clean-up there will be a pot-luck BBQ, entertainment & raffle prizes.

Each month, in a different Oahu neighborhood, local businesses provide free services for the collection of recyclables. In turn, the community is cleaned up and the participating recycling companies donate the funds generated to local non-profit and charitable organizations. Items that are typically collected include: scrap metal, appliances, newspaper and cardboard, beverage containeers, cellular phones, car batteries, old computers, and much more.
