Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps/Urban Corps Team Leader
Kupu is a 501c3 nonprofit organization which aims to empower youth to serve their communities through character building, service learning, and environmental stewardship. Kupu aims to train and equip young adults in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific Rim with work skills, life skills, and knowledge to help them become successful as individuals and as part of the greater community. Kupu is staffed by people with a heart to better Hawaii while working as a team with a purpose of doing what is pono and doing what is best for Hawaii and its people. Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps/Urban Corps
The purpose of the Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC) is to provide a healthy and hands-on educational experience to Hawaii’s youth in order to encourage environmental stewardship, cultural awareness, personal growth, teamwork, leadership, skills, and an environmental mindset. Specifically, the Urban Corps is to equip under-resourced young adults with the experiences, education, training, and support needed to become productive members of society with a heart to serve and positively impact the community around them.
Position Duties
This position is a full-time position that runs from January, 2012 through September, 2012 (with possible opportunities to extend employment) and includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:
- Supervise and manage Corps members during program hours
- Work alongside Corps members in completing conservation and other “green” job work projects
- Support and encourage Corps members to reflect on their character, skills, and behaviors in order to make positive life choices that will assist them in making a successful transition into adulthood
- Facilitate group discussions as well as educational or work activities
- Supervise daily reflection and provide mentorship to Corps members
- Transport Corps members to and from program activities utilizing a Kupu vehicle
- Collect data to demonstrate the value of Corps members’ service
Lead Corps members in daily calisthenics exercises - Assist program coordinators in organizing transportation and logistics with sites
- Assist program coordinators in outreach and recruitment, which may include presentations at schools or attendance at events
- Assist program coordinators with interviewing, selecting, orientating, and training Corps members
- Assist Education and Outreach AmeriCorps Member with education activities or lessons
- Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
This is an AmeriCorps position. In order to be considered, one must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Available full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) from January, 2012-September, 2012
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien age 21 or older
- Have reliable transportation to and from the Kewalo Basin area as well as the Kahala area
- Be able to mentally and physically complete outdoor environmental work projects
- Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
- Desire to serve the community and work with young adults
- Have a positive attitude
- Have the ability to react quickly in possible stressful situations
Desired
It is preferred, but not required, that the applicant has the following:
- Experience working with under-resourced or at-risk youth or young adults
- Counseling, teaching, or mentoring experience
- Outdoor work experience
Benefits
- Bi-weekly living allowance of approximately $923, with maximum of approximately $21,250 for the term of service
- $5,350 AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion (may go towards student loans or future education expenses)
