Kawaikini: Ka La'au Lā'au Lapa'au

In the 2017-2018 school year, students from Kawaikini NCPCS used their Hawaiʻi Youth Sustainability Challenge grant to purchase labware to distill essential oils from Hawaiian plants. The students intended to sell the oils to raise money for more science-related field trips; however, pigs got into their garden and destroyed the plants.

Using funds from the 2018-2019 Hawaiʻi Youth Sustainability Challenge, students have begun constructing raised garden boxes to protect their plants from pigs. Hopefully, these students will soon have a thriving garden and be able to distill oils from their plants.

Waldorf School: A Vision for a Healthy Niu

Whether they’re planting ʻōhiʻa along the ridge or working at the Kalauhaʻihaʻi fishpond down the road, 8th graders at Waldorf are working to restore Niu from mauka to makai. Through their service work they’ve learned the moʻolelo of Niu and realized it has been damaged by development and needs a vision to help its restoration. As a result, four 8th grade leaders are leading their classmates to create a mural to engage and educate the community about Niu.

In January, the student leaders are collaborating with Chris Cramer (Founder & President, Maunalua Fishpond Heritage Center), brainstorming community engagement methods and creating committees to organize their project implementation plans.

Students are currently implementing their projects until May 2019.
