Kupu is a Honolulu-based 501(c)3 non-profit that was established in 2007 with the mission: “To empower youth to serve their communities through character-building, service-learning, and environmental stewardship opportunities that encourage integrity (pono) with God (Ke Akua), self and others.” This mission has led to the creation hundreds of internships and service learning opportunities which blend green job training and leadership development. Through this work, our interns support over 150 partner sites across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region that are implementing conservation, sustainability and environmental education initiatives. We are proud that on an annual basis, over 17,000 volunteers and participants share upwards of 230,000 service hours with us. In return, we have engaged over 3,000 youth since 2007, which has led to a cumulative community economic benefit to Hawaiʻi of over $50 million.
With every donation, Kupu has been able to generate nearly a threefold return in economic and environmental benefits to our local community. We are are committed to conserving the natural beauty of Hawaiʻi and ensuring the our next generation of green leaders are well-prepared for both the challenges and opportunities ahead. Please note that all contributions to Kupu are tax deductible. Mahalo for your investment in our mission!
Kupu wants you! We are continuously seeking Oʻahu-based volunteers to support our biannual service days. If you are interested in giving back and learning about restoration projects across the island, please join us! Through the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Make a Difference Day, volunteers are given the opportunity to steward our islands’ precious natural resources by restoring native forests, freshwater streams, loko iʻa (fishponds), kalo loʻi (taro fields) and wildlife refuges.
Since our establishment in 2007, thousands of volunteers have worked to make our local communities more beautiful, sustainable and resilient. We are grateful to be part of these efforts and would be thrilled if you joined the green movement with us! Furthermore, if you have expertise in a special area that could be applied to our Green job training facility or administrative team, we would love to connect with you.
If you would like to integrate volunteering into your routine, there are endless ways to give back. Check out Kupu’s Green Events Calendar, which provide listings of environmental opportunities including, workdays, trainings and resources across the islands. The majority of these opportunities are seeking support for outdoor restoration projects, however some organizations also need assistance with administrative or research efforts. If you are an organization looking for volunteers or would like an event added to our calendar, please contact us at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
