Maeghan’s Story

In 2009, Maeghan Castillo began her journey with Kupu as a summer intern on Hawaiʻi Island, where she was introduced to the world of conservation and to leaders deeply committed to stewarding Hawaiʻi’s communities and ʻāina. That formative experience inspired her to pursue a degree in Environmental Science and grad certificate in Non-Profit Management at UH Mānoa.

Over the years, Maeghan mentored youth and collaborated with leading conservation professionals through Kupu’s Environmental Education Leader program. She later helped operate Kupu’s largest program, the Conservation Leadership Development Program—first as a program coordinator for three years, then as assistant manager for four years. In these roles, she created professional development opportunities for emerging leaders and partnered closely with host site organizations who serve as pillars in Hawaiʻi’s conservation sector. “Kupu has given me the chance to visit and steward some of the most beautiful places across the islands, while also learning from great leaders and nurturing friendships that have lasted far beyond the program. Like many other Kupu alumni, no matter what sector (of work) we’re in, I know we’ll always stay connected through the shared experiences we’ve had caring for ʻāina.”

Make it stand out

Today, Maeghan serves as Kupu’s Community Impact Manager, where she builds and nurtures connections that ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability.

Maeghan’s growth reflects what Kupu is all about: creating pathways and upward mobility for young people to thrive, lead, and give back.

🌱 Full circle giving: Maeghan not only serves Kupu—she’s been a monthly recurring donor for two years, helping others follow in her footsteps.
